Have you been using the internet to sell your crafts online? If not, why not? What other tool can you use to reach millions of potential customers at a cost of a few dollars a month?

One of the best arguments that I know for marketing and selling crafts online is that with traditional selling, you usually have to spend a lot of money to make any kind of profit. For instance, if you want to sell at craft fairs, you have to send in booth rental fees months in advance of the show dates. If you do several shows a year, that’s a lot of cash tied up that could be otherwise available.

Expenses involved in selling online are relatively less, in fact much less. The real investment is in the time it takes you to set up and publish content to a web site (either your own or an online storefront like Etsy or Artfire), listing auction pages, getting product reviews and getting incoming links.

The big challenge with selling online is that it’s so easy to find your time eaten up by the distracting influences of the net. That’s why you need a focused plan of daily marketing activities and action steps to keep you on track.

Finding the Best Craft Shows

There’s a lot of craft shows to sell your crafts at, but how do you find out the best events for your craft? I have had very good results referring to the Sunshine Artist Audit Book. It contains reviews of craft fairs by the artisans themselves who rate events based on sales, attendance, show promoters, weather and other criteria.

It may seem pricey to buy the audit book, but I found shows in there that made me thousands of dollars in sales. Unfortunately, the last issue of the Sunshine Artist Audit Book is only updated in 2007. When they come out with a new edition, I’ll be among the first to buy.

10 Places to Sell Crafts

There are many ways to sell your crafts. Here is a list of possibilities:

1. Sell crafts on eBay.com and Etsy.com
2. Sell at craft fairs, county and state fairs
3. Approach gift stores that sell crafts like yours
4. Find a sales rep to represent your craft items to the gift trade
5. Set up a booth at a trade show for the giftware trade. (This could be costly.)
6. Sell crafts at home parties
7. Sell crafts at craft malls
8. License your crafts’ designs to large publishing companies
9. Put up a web site and focus on getting traffic from people searching for crafts you make to sell.
10. Sell crafts through mail order catalogs that carry handmade items like yours.

Each of the above methods is a craft business in itself. Pick the ideas that are least expensive to start with and test the marketplace. Keep track of your results so you’ll know where to sell to in the future. Home parties, craft fairs, Etsy.com and eBay.com may be your cheapest markets to enter.

Craft Show in Charleston, West Virginia

The annual Capital City Art and Craft Show in Charleston WV is coming up from Nov. 21-23 at the Charleston Civic Center. This festival is the state’s largest indoor arts and craft show featuring the craft work of more than 160 artisans from West Virginia and eight other states. The event is sponsored by the Kanawha City Lions Club.

Craft displays will include basket weaving, metal crafts, handmade candles, jewelry, leather work, calligraphy, pottery and glass, photography, watercolors, quilting and holiday decorations.

Selling Crafts in Many Places

I was thinking today about how when I first started selling my handwoven wearable art at craft shows and to stores, I didn’t really consider going much further with my marketing. Getting inventory for events and keeping the shops happy, kept me busy enough from week to week.

But in these times, it seems we need to consider looking at more places to sell crafts as a form of insurance that a bad performing craft show or a store closing doesn’t knock out our whole craft business.

It may make sense to add in several places to sell crafts and several of those are geared for selling crafts online, like ebay, etsy, and some of the other sites. Finding more stores can be faster through a site like wholesalecrafts.com. Mail order catalogs like The Sundance Catalog could also help round out the mix.

And then there’s tried-and-true home parties for selling crafts.
