The first of many news releases to come announced Craftsu to the media today early this morning. Over the weekend it will get picked up and read by thousands of sites and news outlets. In just a few hours since going live, the news release has received more than 8000 impressions.

If you have not yet signed up for a free artist’s account, I recommend it. If you are promoting your
crafts online, Craftsu will help you reach more buyers. And it’s completely free to use.

Some helpful tips to remember when creating your profile on Craftsu (or any other shopping site):

1) use quality images; good photos are all shoppers have to look at to make a buying decision

2) link to your Etsy, Artfire or other domain from your profile and in any posts you make

Paul is a publicity expert and former news editor. He’s helped my clients and I get national press coverage in newspapers, magazines, blogs and other news outlets. Because of Paul’s advice, one of my coaching clients had his handmade craft products featured on The Today Show, CNN, BBC and many other major outlets.

Buy and Sell Crafts at Craftsu

For several years I’ve been researching the best ways to promote art and crafts via the Internet. I believe I’ve come up with a venue that delivers and will continue to provide the most effective methods available for harnessing free traffic online.

Craftsu.com will help you as a craft artist / artisan / photographer get more exposure and attract new customers for your products. Think Facebook + Etsy + blogging. It’s more than just a place to buy and sell crafts.

The more content you add, the better your chances of getting search engine hits. And I’m going to teach you how to place the right keywords in your content to attract more visitors.

Card.ly is lets you publish your own social media business cards. It’s super easy to input your business information and your social media accounts like Twitter and Facebook. You can also choose from a variety of themes.

Magntize works like Card.ly and is pretty much offering the same kind of choices. You can add your photo, links to your blog and your company website. Magntize can also pick up content from your other social sites and display it on your virtual business card.

In marketing, it’s not what you say about yourself, but what others say about you that people pay attention to. The more positive third party reviews and ratings you have, the better.

Getting reviews on some of the sites listed below provide excellent ways to help you get found in local searches. Local search is becoming more and more popular, but still overlooked as a marketing method by many craft business owners.

Here are some of the top social shopping review sites:

Stylefeeder.com — StyleFeeder is a shopping engine that makes personal recommendations. Shoppers use tags to search for items they want or they can browse the bookmarked lists of other members. It’s fairly easy to add items to the site, even your own.

Iliketotallyloveit.com — Love this site’s name! This site allows users to publish and share products with the broader public which they find cool, innovative, exceptionally beautiful, or just weird. Included with every item is a link to an online shop where it can be purchased, like your Etsy or Artfire store.

Myhandmaderegistry.com — List your craft items at this handmade registry, where visitors can create a personal page with a list of their favorite items from only handmade retailers. Designed for handcraft shop owners to share their wishlist with their families and friends.

Thefind.com — Consumers can search products from stores and online merchants here. When I typed in the word “handmade,” there were 5,504 stores with 855,457 products. They also have a blog where you can add your RSS feed at Thefindbuzz.com.

Shopwiki.com — Shopwiki is a guide designed to help consumers find specific products on the Internet via consumer-written wikis. It’s a resource for quickly finding facts and pricing on all kinds of items.

The site is called FindaFeature.blogspot.com. Unfortunately, the owner chose a theme with a dark background and light colored text, so the posts are difficult to read. But this could still be a good resource for finding sites that will let you get the word out about your handmades.

From the home page, look on the upper left for “Blog Features Needed” to see if you have an item that could fit.

However, there is a whole other area of publicity appearing in the feature sections of publications which typically comes under the heading of lifestyle. Lifestyle editors and producers consistently look for human interest stories, perhaps even yours.

Publicity is free coverage, but that does not mean it is not worth the effort it takes to get it. Ads get almost no credibility, whereas appearing in a magazine or on TV, gives you instant endorsements and can propel your sales to new heights overnight.

Bust Magazine Features Crafts From Indie Designers

Self-taught artists Marcia and Bill Finks created figures from rusted steel. After working for Sears and Roebuck for 21 years, Bill lost his job. They started creating art from old tin barn roofs found around the countryside. Within a few years their work appeared in publications like Country Home, House Beautiful, Home, Country Living, Elle Decor, Newsweek and also appeared on Oprah, House, and Garden Network.

If you choose to go for publicity, create an online media kit where you have everything an editor might need to craft a story. Your media kit should contain:

* Fact sheet containing your craft business information, including who you are, what you do, where you are located, when you got started, how you make your crafts, and why.
* High resolution, professional-looking photos of you, you making your crafts, and several of your most artistic pieces.
* Video (optional) of you making or talking about your craft items.
* Exhibit dates, if you have craft shows lined up for the coming year.
* Previous interviews, articles, press clips, or reviews.
* Any awards or competitions you have won.
* If you have them, include jokes, funny stories, unusual facts.
* Contact information.

Here are a few ideas for getting editors attention:

• Relate your craft to current events. If there is something making the news that relates to one of your products, write a story. Reporters are always looking for items that tie into what’s being read and talked about in the mainstream media.

• Write a story about the origins of your craft.

• Announce any awards you have just won. Local newspapers like to feature independent businesses that receive recognition because it looks great for the community.

• Write a story if you live near, work at, or sell your crafts in a historic or unusual location.

• Take advantage of holiday gift buying. Feature editors always look for stories ahead of holidays. Consider creating a Web page for every special day with craft gift buying recommendations. Find out interesting facts about each special occasion and include stories to enliven reader interest. For instance, you could create a report on how Fathers Day came about and somehow tie into your crafts.

• Donate a craft product to a charitable cause. Send a news release to local newspapers, magazines and TV shows with a photo of your piece. Anne Geddes combined her interest in prevention of child abuse through sales of her premiere calendar. Since then, annual Anne Geddes calendar editions have been bestsellers around the world.

The key to getting coverage is to be professional when interacting with the media. Respect their time and realize that any coverage they give you will help you get the word out and sell more of your handmade crafts.

With advertising, you pay for your message to be delivered exactly as you want it to read. With publicity, you have no say over what the media says about you. But it is free and it can bring you business so it is worth the effort. At the very least, what you do to prepare for media coverage will improve the appearance of your professional image.

There are two main types of news: hard news – that is breaking news that typically dominates the headlines and soft news (sometimes called evergreen, because it can be run anytime) which you see filling up the features columns.

Most of the time, your craft making project is going to fit into the features / lifestyles / evergreen area. The simple fact is the media is looking for human interest stories and an unusual craft project could easily fill the need. Put together a human interest story, some good photos of your project and yourself and send it to your local newspaper editors or TV station news editors.
