Video 20 answers the question you should be asking: "Am I in business or is selling crafts just a hobby?" Video 20 of 20 in the Series:

"What are the required licenses for a craft business?"

Business licensing requirements differ from state to state. You may need a local city or county business license to sell your crafts. If you are going to open up a business checking account for your craft business (and you should) most banks will require a copy of your business license.

Find a link to your state's business licensing info at: www.sba.gov/localresources/index.html

In most states, you will probably need a local business license and a state sales tax permit.

Typically, states require that you collect and pay them sales tax on any purchases made in your state, whether the sale is online or by mail or over the counter. To apply for a sales tax permit, search online for "(your state) sales tax permit application."

Getting the required licenses for a craft business becomes more important when the question you really should be answering is ....

"Is selling crafts a business for me or is this just a hobby?"

If you are thinking "It's time I got serious about making a real business from selling crafts," understand that successful craft artists plan ahead.

Successful craft artists take time to research where to find the best markets and how to display their work in compelling ways.

I am going to share with you now the most effective planning method I've found.

Create a marketing calendar where you plan out your craft selling activities. Put down in writing what actions you will be taking and when you will take them. Keep track of sales resulting from these actions so you will know the kinds of marketing to do more of.

Update your craft business marketing calendar every month, tweaking it according to your results. After a few months of following your calendar and monitoring which markets perform best, you will be able to make smarter decisions about your future growth.

A marketing calendar for your craft business will eliminate fears of uncertainty. It will put you in control because you will know where your business is going instead of guessing.
